It Ain’t Just a Drill: Getting the Most Out of Your Flex Shaft

This two-day work shop will cover the basic Machine itself—from the motor, down the shaft to the speed control and handpiece—and will discuss the use of burrs, bits, grinding, shaping, finishing and polishing aids:  the stuff they didn’t teach you in school.  It Ain’t Just a Drill is a mix of demonstration and real time experience, so expect to get your hands dirty exploring some of the techniques and tools addressed—and some eye opening, innovative tricks as well.  Please note:  While students will try many of the tools and techniques discussed, this is NOT a project class.

BIO: Metalsmith, educator and writer Andy Cooperman works from his Seattle studio where he builds jewelry and objects (from metal, wood, glass, quills and ping pong balls) for exhibitions and private clients. His work and writing has appeared in blogs, magazines and books, including Humor in Craft, Art Jewelry Today (I, II & III) and The Penland Book of Jewelry and is in private and public collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Central College in Pella Iowa, and the Tacoma Art Museum.

As a teacher, Andy’s goal is to help students develop the creative problem-solving tools that will allow them to see beyond standard solutions and open new doors onto the creative process. He teaches and lectures nationally at conferences and at craft schools, art centers, universities and private studios and is available as a visiting artist, curator and creative pot stirrer.
